My setup won't work for everyone, but it's easy for me (and I don't know much about Linux).UPDATE: When Google and Mozilla removed Avast’s web extension from their stores, a scandal broke out which revealed that Avast (who also owns AVG) had allegedly been spying on their users’ browsing data and selling it to corporations for millions of dollars in profit. I know it's not 100% secure, but this seems more secure than Windows. In theory nothing online can see or touch anything else on my computer except in one folder on my flash drive (and I don't give rights for any program to run in that directory). This weekend I discovered a newer version of Puppy Linux that can block my browser's access to my files except in one directory that is dedicated to Internet downloads. My Linux operating system is portable, and it boots up much faster than Windows. I save what I need elsewhere and use a flash drive for my settings file. It runs in RAM without changing files on my Linux CD or my hard drive. I connect to the Internet with Puppy Linux that I boot from a CD. ![]() The side effect is that others also have fewer chances to infect my computer with spyware or viruses. #AVAST ANTIVIRUS COMPARISON TABLE WIKI WINDOWS#I don't connect my home computer online using Windows anymore - mainly because I didn't want Microsoft messing with my system. There have been successful crowd funding attempts for privacy-oriented emails, so no idea why there is not one for an AV. From what I could gather, lot of the AV programs out there rely on a single engine, so an open-source AV could do the same. I am no tech expert, but I cannot imagine that the AV being open source would be a security flaw. Regarding an Open Source AV, I couldn't find anything. #AVAST ANTIVIRUS COMPARISON TABLE WIKI FREE#What is hilarious is that I thought buying the premium Avast AV would result in less spying on me as a customer, since they no longer have to save my data, but the privacy policies for the free and premium Avast AV is essentially identical. The best I could find is to switch to an AV that is not free, like Emsisoft (they seem to acknowledge the lack of privacy-oriented AVs on the market, but sadly charge quite a lot for it in return). I am with Avast (also from Czech Rep) and according to the report from 2014, it is similar to AVG - at least according to how intrusive it is per the report's comparison table. Doing the usual, like going to open-source SW/OS, using VPN and/or TOR, adding privacy related plugins to browsers and so forth, only to still have the AV be a huge weakspot that undermines the whole thing if they log (and sell) my traffic. I have been thinking the same thing lately.
